Health Programs

Programs & Services

To carry out our mission, we have implemented several programs to serve the needs of our community:

Health Start

The mission of the Baby Sprouts Health Start program is to develop and implement prevention programs for women and their families that establish healthy birth outcomes and healthy behaviors. Baby Sprouts addresses health, environmental, and stress factors that can impact birth outcomes and the development of infants and children.

Families participating in this program receive home visits and case management by nurses and social workers who live and work in their communities. Healthy babies start with early prenatal care, and mothers-to-be receive education about fetal development and how certain behaviors can affect it.

Following delivery, mothers receive postpartum depression screening, breastfeeding support, and ongoing health education. Children receive periodic screening to identify potential developmental delays or health risks.

Please contact us if you or someone you know can benefit from these services.

Maternal Child Health

Our goal is to decrease intentional and unintentional injuries and to improve the health of women prior to pregnancy. Following the Spectrum of Prevention, the program moves from providing direct services to providing community education, provider education, fostering coalitions, changing organizational practices, and implementing policy.

Injury Prevention Program

Preventable injury is the number one cause of death for children in the United States. We want to lower those numbers. Here’s what we’re doing:

Child Passenger Safety Instructor Services

Our goal is to increase the number of certified child passenger safety technicians in the rural areas of southern and northern Apache County. We accomplish this by:

  • providing access for instructor services in the rural areas of southern and northern Apache County;
  • networking with agencies that work with children to promote car seat and seat belt safety;
  • offering individuals in the community training to become certified child passenger safety technicians; and
  • assisting the community with car seat/seat belt education.

Successful technicians put their knowledge and skills to work through a variety of activities, including child safety seat checks. Instructors who receive certification through Safe Kids Worldwide may offer classes to individuals interested in becoming certified child passenger safety technicians.

Tobacco Education & Chronic Disease Program

Tobacco use kills more people every year than alcohol abuse, homicide, suicide, illegal drugs, car accidents, fires, and AIDS combined. It is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and Arizona and represents one of the largest threats to public health of our time.

The Apache County Tobacco Use and Chronic Disease Prevention Program is dedicated to providing:

Schools/Groups:

  • Multi-session prevention programs at public, alternative, charter and private schools, youth groups, private groups, and clubs
  • One-time presentations promoting healthy lifestyles for our youth at state-promoted monthly events including youth health fairs, Teen Maze, and the STAND program

Worksites:

  • Assistance in writing tobacco use policies
  • Signage and employee educational materials
  • Onsite tobacco cessation services
  • Employee wellness information and CDSMP workshops free of charge to all employees

Community:

  • Health/Wellness outreach through free CDSMP, tobacco, and diabetes workshops and community health fairs aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles for Apache County residents.
  • Tobacco cessation services to adults, including low-cost nicotine replacement therapy and medication through ASHLine.
  • Education to merchants selling tobacco products
  • Community tobacco prevention and education activities and events
  • Train healthcare providers and community members to conduct brief cessation interventions with tobacco users
